Lira University Hospital is the first University Teaching Hospital in Uganda. It is well known for training medical and allied health students. The hospital also offers clinical services to the communities in and around the University and sometimes even referrals for outside the Lango sub region. It is a 110 bed hospital which started offering medical care services in October 2018. The hospital was officially opened by the President of the Republic of Uganda, His Excellency General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on 1st November 2019.
This is a public hospital which charges a modest fee that is used for procuring medicines and medical supplies. The outpatient consultation is (5,000/=), normal delivery is (50,000/=), caesarean section is T (300,000/=). Major operations such as hysterectomy, thyroidectomy, laparotomy, and are charged (500,000/=). The highest operation charge is for prostatectomy which is (800,000/=). These charges may however be reviewed as circumstances warrant.

In addition, the hospital runs a HIV/ART and TB clinic every Monday to Friday.

The hospital is developing to:

  1. Become an excellent center for undergraduate and postgraduate training for healthcare workers.
  2. Provide specialised medical services in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Surgery, Paediatrics and Child Health; and Internal Medicine. The hospital will develop highly specialised services in Reproductive medicine (Assisted Reproductive Technology), Urogynaecology, Urology, Cardiology, Orthopedic, Surgery, Neurosurgery, etc.
  3. Become a centre for outstanding high quality clinical research. To achieve these targets the hospital runs general outpatient services on; Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. On Saturday, the general outpatient services run from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. The hospiotal has a 24 hours’ Accident and Emergency Unit to handle emergencies daily.

Lastly, as a University Teaching Hospital, Lira University’s mandate is to produce health professionals in the medical and paramedical fields such as clinical, laboratory, therapeutic, nursing, dental, and community health sciences.  A Teaching Hospital is used as a training facility for students but it also provides day to day traditional clinical functions of a hospital. The Teaching hospital is also a center for applied medical research expected to attract researchers from allover the world to conduct critical studies and inquiry into tropical medicine, pharmaceutical sciences including herbal medicine and a host of other medical research. Lira University Teaching Hospital has a poll of consultants who provide specialized consultancy services to our clients and help train students and mentor younger faculty staff.

  1. The hospital still has inadequate investigative capacity due to lack of equipment in some of the essential units. At the moment, there is no x-ray services. However, the procurement of a modern x-ray machine is in advance stage. It is expected to be installed in July 2021.
  2. The laboratory investigations are still limited because of difficulties in procuring laboratory reagents. Steps are being taken to solve this challenge.
