By Patrick Opio (Senior Public Relations Officer)

Lira University Teaching Hospital is the first of its kind in the entire country, a standard facility used for teaching health students, says Vice Chancellor, Professor Jasper Ogwal Okeng.

Ogwal Okeng reveals that whereas other universities train their students from elsewhere, Lira University has its own vibrant teaching hospital which is the Training Centre for all the medical students in the University and also provides comprehensive health services to the public.

The Vice Chancellor adds that the hospital was constructed with support from African Development Bank-Higher Education Science & Technology project.

The Hospital’s Director, Dr Otim Tom Charles observes that the health facility is a powerful project boosting efforts of training students in health sciences.

Dr Otim lists services provided at the Hospital as specialized Obstetrics and Gynecology Services, specialized Medical Services and specialized Surgical Services.

Other areas of concentration at the hospital are specialized Pediatrics and Child Health Services, accidents and emergency services and general Outpatient Services.

Dr Otim also encourages women and children to visit the facility for effective management of their illnesses. He adds that the hospital has senior and experienced 20 medical doctors with 13 specialists, with several vibrant nurses and support staff.

He notes that the hospital has a bed capacity of 110 for admission with staff working 24 hours to ensure prompt and efficient management and attendance to patients. “Our treatment costs are highly subsidized, very cheap, for all including the poor to access the services,” Dr Otim observes.

Dr Otim adds, “for example, men, women and children’s wards are fully fledged and functional, modern well-stuffed surgery theatre.” He urges pregnant women and children with different sicknesses to visit the health facility for treatment.

Lira University, a public educational institution created in 2015, is located in Ayere cell, Barapwo Ward, Lira City West Division, Lira City. The university covers a total area of 621 acres (251.3 hectares).
