Master of Midwifery Science
Beacon Centre of Applied Sciences and Technology
MISSION:
To provide access to quality nursing and midwifery higher education, conduct research, and provide appropriate health services directed towards sustainable healthy community and environment.
The Master of Midwifery Science (MMS) program is designed for midwife professionals to gain deeper knowledge, develop high-level skills and synthesize clinical experience in order to function as an influential member of the healthcare team in a global context. The program is delivered through a blended curriculum including in person and online courses and clinical placements. Lira University’s MMS program encourages critical thinking and forward planning in all domains of midwifery practice, both in Uganda and abroad.
The MMS program addresses the urgent need for competent midwife leaders in the country and the region. Graduates from the MMS program will provide the critically needed specialized human resource for health in the Ministry of Health and District Health office, hospitals and health centres, bringing quality healthcare nearer to where pregnant mothers and their newborns live. Based on the current established positions, education requirements, and deployments for nurses and midwives as stipulated in scheme of service for nurses and midwives in Uganda, masters-prepared midwives will be qualified to occupy the positions such as the Assistant District Health Officer (ADHO)-Maternal and Child Health (MCH) at the District Local Government, the Assistant Commissioner Nursing and Midwifery at the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the National Referral Hospital (NRH); and the Commissioner Nursing at the Ministry of Health.
MMS-graduates are well-trained to occupy a variety of national and global positions such as:
- Researchers
- Educators
- Clinicians
- Non-Governmental Organizations(NGO) employees
- Project officers
- Managers
- Private entrepreneurs providing maternity-related services
Lira University’s MMS program will produce candidates for doctoral studies in midwifery and subsequently researchers and educators to lead locally relevant evidence-based midwifery practice, impacting the growth and impact of midwifery-led care for generations to come.
