Lira University Team has joined more than 5,000 delegates from across the globe attending the XXV International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) World Congress, that opened Sunday, 5 October 2025, in Cape Town, South Africa.
Senior Lecturer, Dr. Samson Udho noted that FIGO 2025 Conference will run from 5th to 9th October, offering exceptional opportunities for in-person learning and collaboration, an ideal setting to learn, connect and build momentum for improving women’s and girls’ health worldwide.

Lira University delegation is led by Ms Anna Grace Auma, the Dean Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery. Dr. Gasthony Alobo, Mr. Ekung Emmanuel, Ms Felister Apili and Deborah Namutebi are lecturers attending the conference.
FIGO is a global organization that unites professional societies of obstetricians and gynaecologists worldwide to improve women’s health and reduce disparities in healthcare.
Dr. Udho revealed that FIGO looks forward to using Cape Town 2025 to celebrate progress made over the past two years, including the development of strategic partnerships.
“This year’s rich scientific programme will bring together several global experts and voices covering cutting-edge advances, innovations, and urgent challenges.,” he noted.
Key themes and topics will include maternal and new-born health: respectful care, preterm birth, reducing mortality and morbidity, sexual and reproductive health and rights: contraception, safe abortion, assisted reproductive technology.
Others are surgery and oncology: women’s cancer prevention and treatment, fistula repair, pelvic floor disorders, gynaecology across the life course: menopause, endometriosis, paediatric/adolescent gynaecology and global women’s health and policy: transgender care, migrant/refugee health, climate change’s impact on women’s health.
Delegates will have access to more workshops, simulation labs and surgical video classrooms across key clinical areas. Whether it’s maternal foetal medicine, clinical obstetrics, minimally invasive surgery, or emerging technologies in topics like reproductive health, the goal is to ensure people leave with both knowledge and practical competence.
Attendees will also enjoy hands-on simulation labs and interactive workshops, the FIGO Film Festival showcasing short films spanning surgical techniques, advocacy stories and real-world impact.
“We collaborate to build a future where women across the world enjoy the highest standards of health and wellbeing throughout their lives,” Dr. Udho said.
With the programme that bridges medical expertise and vital social discourse, Dr. Udho said, this event will unite obstetricians, gynaecologists, midwives, nurses and allied health professionals, while embracing broader conversations on rights, justice and innovation.
