More than 2,800 students from Lira University and other tertiary education institutions in Lira City have been successfully trained and passed out as patriots.
Resident City Commissioner (RCC), Lira City, Lawrence Egole praised President Yoweri Museveni for initiating Patriotism Training in schools, a move that strengthens the national pride. He was addressing audience at the pass-out ceremony of 2,865 patriots held at Lira University Main Campus on 7th October 2025.
The students were drawn from four universities and nine other tertiary institutions including medical Training schools.
Mr. Egole said that patriotism is a core value that binds the citizens of any nation together, promoting a sense of unity, love, and commitment towards the homeland.

In Uganda, Mr. Egole said, a nation with a rich cultural heritage and diverse population, the government has taken a significant step to instil patriotism by introducing specialized training programs in schools.
Mr. Egole observed that patriotism training plays a crucial role in shaping the future of any nation, and Uganda is no exception. In a rapidly changing world, Mr. Egole said, it is essential to equip young Ugandans with the knowledge, values, and skills that will enable them to contribute positively to their communities and the nation as a whole.
On historical awareness, he said, the training teaches students the history, significant events, and influential figures of Uganda, connecting them to their heritage and shaping a better future.
“For national pride and cultural heritage, the programme includes national symbols, patriotic songs, and the celebration of cultural heritage, helping students understand their own value and importance to the country, leading to better focus on studies and a more positive mindset,” Mr. Egole revealed.
Lira University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jasper Ogwal Okeng lauded the RCC’s office for organising the patriotism training in schools. He noted that patriotism training provides students with historical awareness and promotes discipline, leadership skills, and a commitment to national development and cultural preservation.
Prof. Ogwal Okeng said that patriotism training in universities cultivates national unity, a sense of belonging and collective responsibility, and civic values such as respect for law and authority, loyalty, and selfless service to the nation.
“We are aware that patriotic students are inspired to love and promote their nation’s interests, fostering a spirit of selfless service and sacrifice,” he said, adding that patriotism cultivates discipline, integrity, and leadership qualities, empowering students to lead with honesty and serve their communities.
Lira University Dean of Students, Ms Emma Aceng said, on national unity and social cohesion, patriotism training fosters solidarity and a shared identity among diverse students, promoting harmony regardless of differences in race, religion, or ethnicity.
Ms Aceng noted that the training encourages students to become responsible citizens by obeying laws, protecting public property and participating in national development.
She commended Lira University Management for allowing students enrol in the patriotic training exercise and hosting the pass-out ceremony.
