Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Thomas Teyabwa has advised Higher education institutions to give special attention to the Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.
While opening the 15th Exhibitions event organised by National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) in Mbarara City, on 26th March 2025, Tayebwa revealed that AI offers transformative benefits in education, including personalized learning, enhanced accessibility, increased efficiency, and improved student engagement, ultimately leading to better educational outcomes.
The three-day exhibition event was guided by the theme “Challenges, Best Practices, and Strategies for Artificial Intelligence Integration in Higher Education in Uganda”. Lira University was among the education institutions that participated in the event.
Prof. Mary J. N. Okwakol, the Executive Director National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) noted that NCHE was established as the regulator of higher education to implement the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act of Parliament (UOTIA, 2001).
“By the provisions of the Act, NCHE is mandated to guide the establishment of institutions of higher learning as well as ensure the delivery of quality and relevant education to all qualified persons,” she adds.
Okwakol further indicated that NCHE has strived to achieve its mandate to ensure that relevant and sustainable quality higher education is provided at all Higher Educational Institutions in Uganda. Through strategic intervention areas, NCHE is strategically positioned as it pursues its mandate through mandatory functions.
She said that Artificial intelligence has opened up a new world of learning and teaching as the world changes rapidly. The technology is revolutionary and comes with numerous advantages that could change the face of education.
She asserts, “AI is providing significant support in improving the quality and accessibility of education from personalized learning experiences to streamlined administrative tasks.”
