Lira University’s 3rd Council Chairperson, Mr. David Geoffrey Opio Okello has advised the university staff to observe time management for effective and efficient service delivery.

Opio Okello noted that effective time management allows staff to wisely define how to use work hours and concentrate on the tasks that warrant their focus. “Poor time management can lead to missed deadlines, incomplete tasks, and decreased productivity,” he cautions.

He was officiating the handover ceremony of Faculty Deans and Heads of departments at Doctors Hostel hall, Lira University Main Campus on 19th September 2024.

On why time management is important, Opio Okello, retired Deputy Governor, Bank of Uganda, alludes that an effective time management strategy can make staff workday more efficient and effective.

“Let us meet our deadlines, manage our time, and it will be easier to deliver work on time. With the right strategies, we can leave behind the days of procrastination and last-minute cramming before deadlines,” he advises.

He added that staff should prioritize office tasks and get a better handle on their workload. “If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the amount of work on your plate, finding a more effective way to manage your time can make it easier to juggle your tasks,” Opio Okello advises.

He called for unity and team spirit amongst staff, a tool that enhances production and productivity at the university. “Take research and innovations seriously, they are core in the university agenda,” he adds.

The Chair Council congratulated those elected as Faculty Deans and Heads of department saying their ought to adhere to the laws and policies of the university while in office. “Office bearers should perform diligently, understand their roles and duties and boundaries, be flexible,” he says.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jasper Ogwal Okeng revealed that Faculty Deans are academic leaders who have academic, programmatic, managerial, and fiscal responsibilities for their respective jurisdiction.  He added that Deans should be able to verify the adequacy of instruction, monitor academic integrity, and are responsible for student recruitment, admission, and academic progress.

Prof. Ogwal Okeng added that the elected leaders should avoid being “bosses”, scaring staff, but rather work with them as colleagues. “Our university doesn’t discriminate nor segregate against tribalism, the reason we attract students and staff from across the country,” VC notes.

Bosco Onyik, the Council member and Appointments Board Chairperson said that they are committed and willing to appoint only competent and experienced staff into the service of the university.

“Students are the main clients, stakeholders of the university, therefore they must get effective and efficient learning and training opportunities from competent academic staff and others,” he asserts.
