The First-Year students of Lira University are joyous and enthusiastic as they attend the one-week long orientation into the culture and practices of the institution.

The Acting Dean of Students, Mr. Opok James Bond welcomed the freshers to the University. “You have made a visionary choice to join Lira University, an institution anchored firmly on the core pillars of Knowledge, Innovation, and Community Service,” Mr. Opok said while addressing the students at EMBA Hall, on 11th August 2026.

More than 3,000 students have been admitted to join the Beacon in the 2026/2027 academic year.

Mr. Opok said, “Today marks the dawn of a transformative chapter in your life’s journey. Transitioning from secondary school to the university environment is an experience filled with immense excitement, but it also carries unique challenges. I want to assure you from the very outset: you are not walking this path alone.”

Out of thousands of competitive applications submitted this year, Mr. Opok said, only 3,000 were chosen. “Please count yourself very lucky. This achievement stands as a testament to your hard work, discipline, and exceptional potential. You are now part of the Lira University family,” he noted.

Mr. Opok added that Lira University community prides itself on academic excellence, groundbreaking research, and the development of graduates destined to serve communities locally, nationally, and globally.

He explained that the fundamental purpose of the Department of the Dean of Students is to ensure that students tenure at Lira University is secure, comfortable, and academically fulfilling. “We manage your holistic environment through several key portfolios like students’ welfare, guidance and counselling, co-curricular activities, among others, “ he said.

Mr. Opok said, “Our administrative philosophy is clear: “No student should suffer in silence.” We operate on the principles of open, honest dialogue, mutual trust, and a deep understanding of one another. We view you not merely as students, but as crucial stakeholders in this institution.”

He said Lira University recognizes that spiritual wellbeing is indispensable to your holistic development. “We provide designated places of worship on campus, and we encourage you to engage with the vibrant faith communities in our surrounding area,” he said.

Mr. Opok said, although the University Management grants students an unprecedented level of personal freedom, it is vital to remember that true freedom is inseparable from responsibility.

On academics being the priority, Mr. Opok said, your primary objective here is intellectual growth, attend your lectures diligently, read broadly, cultivate a habit of asking critical questions, and utilize the university library resources effectively.

He revealed that Lira University does not compromise indiscipline behaviours.Familiarize yourself thoroughly with the University Rules and Regulations. Extend profound respect to lecturers, university staff, your peers, and public property. Please embrace discipline, obedience, humility, and hard work at all times.  Your character represents both your family and this institution,” he told the attentive students.

The Dean advised students to take full advantage of the campus health and fitness program mes, maintain proper hygiene, make healthy choices, and avoid high-risk behaviors. “If you ever feel anxious, stressed, or overwhelmed, please step into our Counseling Unit. Seeking help is never a sign of weakness; it is a sign of strength and self-awareness,” he noted.

At Lira University, Mr. Opok said, we live by a distinct set of values: Management Excellence, Professionalism, Effectiveness and Efficiency, Integrity, Accountability, Transparency, All-Inclusiveness, Teamwork, and Internationalization

Mr. Opok hailed the parents and guardians for entrusting Lira University with their sons and daughters. “We accept this responsibility with the utmost seriousness. We pledge to stand as parents to these young men and women, to guide, protect, and nurture them. We will maintain open lines of communication and coordinate with you throughout their academic journey,” he said.
