The Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero has lauded the Management and staff of Lira University for their commitment, hospitality and conducive environment provided to the Surgical Camp doctors that operated 104 patients in four days at their Teaching Hospital.

The Minister commended Lango community for actively participating in the surgical camp held at various health facilities in Lango sub region from 11th to 14th September 2023, totalling to 1,401 patients operated. The surgical camp was conducted by the Association of Surgeons of Uganda, a body that brings together all qualified surgeons and those in training to advance surgical healthcare in Uganda.

The Minister was addressing a congregation at the post camp meeting and registrars’ symposium held at the Education Block, Lira University on Friday 15th September 2023.

The Minister who doubles as the woman MP for Lira City revealed that the surgical team composed of surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and social workers from all over the country.

Lira University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Jasper Ogwal Okeng praised the Health Minister and the Association of Surgeons of Uganda for choosing Lango sub-region and Lira University Teaching Hospital, in particular, as one of the treatment sites during the concluded surgical camp.

“With more than 1,400 patients accessing or benefitting from services of the surgical operation camp held in this poverty stricken part of the country, we are humbled and grateful to the Minister of Health, the surgeons and other medical practitioners. We pray for more medical camps to be held in this region soon and frequently,” Prof. Ogwal Okeng says.

The Vice Chancellor was happy to reveal that the University is launching the Medicine programme this semester and a huge number of applicants had applied to join the course despite limited number of intake required.

Prof. Ogwal Okeng observed that conducting surgical camps definitely reduces the burden of surgical diseases among the community in a selected region which would otherwise have limited access to surgery services.

Present at the Symposium were the Chairperson of Lango Parliamentary Group, also Kole District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Judith Alyek, Lira University Deputy Vice Chancellor, Assoc. Prof. Okaka Opio Dokotum and other dignitaries.
