Lira University Council Members Retooled: Transparency, Accountability and Integrity emphasised

The Chairperson of Lira University 3rd Council, Mr David Geoffrey Opio OKello, has urged Council members and the technical staff to embrace team spirit with accountability, transparency and integrity in the service delivery.

Opio Okello, also retired Deputy Governor, Bank of Uganda, said without effective leadership and good governance at all levels in the university, it is virtually impossible to achieve and to sustain effective administration, to achieve vision, to sustain quality and deliver first-rate services.

He was addressing Members of the Council during the Induction Leadership Training held at EMBA Hall, Lira University Main Campus on 6th August 2024, facilitated by Foundation Leads Limited. Members of the University Top Management also attended the training.

“Let us adopt best practices for the university to grow, attract partners, consult at all times to avoid making unlawful decisions,” he advised.

 Opio Okello added that the increasing complexities and requirements arising from the constant change in society, coupled with the constant push for higher levels of productivity, require effective and ethical leadership and value addition to the university.

“Yes we the members of the Council must join hands to spur development in this young university, account for our leadership period. Good governance and effective-ethical behaviours are therefore essential requirements for the university to be considered successful in the eyes of all stakeholders,” Opio Okello observes.

The former Deputy Governor also cautioned members and staff of the university to ensure effective time management. “Let us keep time in all we do. Time lost will never be recovered….Time is a huge and important resource,” he says.

Assoc. Prof. Okaka Opio Dokotum, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, who represented the Vice Chancellor, noted that the technical team was ready and willing to work amicably with the Council members to achieve the vision and objectives of the university.

The DVC revealed that Management will always ensure effective documentation of all Council activities and share information with relevant stakeholders in time, look for development partners locally and internationally.

Among the topics handled by the Consultancy Team, Foundation Leads Ltd are; The Roles and Function of the University, Strategic Planning and its benefits, Corporate Governance issues, Ethical Principles in leadership, Risk and management, Effective Council meeting, Conflict management, Consensus Building and Voting procures, stakeholder management and communication, conflict resolution.
