The construction of the Lira University’s 2-storey Medical Interns Hostel with a total cost of about 3.4Billion shillings is nearing completion.
Buildmast Engineering Co. Ltd handled the 1st phase up to roof level, costing sh1,248,913,735 as the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) is currently doing finishes and others expected to take shs2.123Billion.
While presiding over the Site Meeting on 15th November 2023, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jasper Ogwal Okeng commended teams from Lira University and NEC for joint effort in the construction works expected to yield the fruit in two weeks’ time.
“I praise the President of Uganda for advising us to use NEC, otherwise construction of projects outside NEC is always very expensive. I believe NEC is not for much profit,” Prof. Ogwal Okeng said.
The Hostel, he said, is expected to cut down accommodation costs as intern doctors and other guests will use the facility.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Assoc. Prof. Okaka Opio Dokotum was equally happy with the good professional workmanship and the high standard of the building coming up. “No doubt, everyone is happy with what NEC team is doing, and we hope the building is completed as indicated in the MoU,” he said.
The University Secretary, Mr Oyang Atubo Augustine lauded the contractor for employing the locals and good construction works. “We are happy with the partnership, we shall keep doing business with NEC so that Lira University projects are effectively and timely done as planned,” Oyang Atubo observed.
NEC report presented to the meeting indicated the status of the project, accomplishment to date, next month planned activities, issues and problems encountered health and safety reports, resources and actual progress update.
