The Parliament of Uganda established Lira University as a the 8th Public University in Uganda, under Statutory Instrument number 35 of 2015.
As a public university we envision being “A BEACON CENTRE OF APPLIED SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY” and we shall get there by providing access to quality higher education, professional training, research and innovations for the delivery of appropriate services directed towards community transformation and conservation of biodiversity.
Lira University cherishes Professionalism, effectiveness and efficiency, accountability and transparency, team work, gender responsiveness, sensitivity and concern for the elderly and people with disability as our core values.
To fulfil the mission, the university has developed fifteen academic programmes, under three faculties. Our flagship faculty (Health Science) is running Programmes in Midwifery, Public Health and Community Psychology and Psychotherapy that have already graduated two groups. The MBChB, Master in Midwifery (women and Neonatal Health), Master in Public Health are being introduced in the 2019/20 academic year. Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy, Postgraduate Diploma in Physiotherapy, Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Medicine, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Health Economics are in the pipeline to be mounted during the 2020/21 academic year. Government has set up an ultramodern teaching hospital to train the future health workers. The facility is being equipped and furnished by the Ministry of Education to international standards.
The Faculty of Management Sciences is offering programmes that will support and complement the science-based programmes. The faculty is offering programmes in Computer Science, Finance and Accounting, Commerce, Business Administration and Public Administration. Our Executive Masters in Business Administration is being run in cooperation with Makerere University Business School.
To complete the picture now, the faculty of Education has been opened to train Science teachers for Primary, Secondary and Tertiary schools.
