Lira University Librarian, Dr. Andrew Ojulong, has encouraged students to adapt to the changing world due to the speedy advancements in the technology.

Dr. Ojulong said Lira University has produced innovative graduates, with others scooping several national and international innovation awards. He was representing the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jasper Ogwal Okeng at the Freshers’ (newly admitted students-2026/2027 academic year) welcome ceremony at Education Block Compound on 8th October 2026. More than 3,000 students have been admitted this academic year.

Dr. Ojulong said, “The world you are joining is changing rapidly, with artificial intelligence, digital innovation, among others, transforming every career.”

He revealed that the current global and national community encounters demand graduates who are not only knowledgeable, but also innovative, adaptable, ethical and committed to finding practical solutions to society’s most pressing challenges.

Dr. Ojulong noted that Lira University is committed to preparing students capable of identifying community problems with their respective solutions. “Our task is not simply to produce graduates, but to develop critical thinkers, responsible citizens, innovators and leaders who will make meaningful contributions to national development and global progress.,” he explained.

Assoc. Prof. Judith Akello Abal, the Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) said starting university is a major milestone that brings new freedoms, responsibilities, and academic shifts to students.

Prof. Abal encouraged the new students to sign up for student groups, sports teams, or academic associations to meet people with shared interests. “Focus on building genuine, supportive connections rather than pressuring yourself to fit in with everyone, respect the campus community, treat lecturers, staff, and fellow students with dignity,” She advised.

The Ag. Dean of Students, Mr. James Bond Opok said University education is fundamentally different from the education the new students have previously experienced, adding that, at Lira University, learning is not confined to the lecture room, it requires curiosity, discipline and personal responsibility.

Mr. Opok revealed, “lecturers will guide you, challenge your thinking and provide opportunities for intellectual growth, but the responsibility for learning rests with you, attend lectures consistently, participate actively in discussions, read widely beyond the prescribed materials, complete your assignments diligently and prepare adequately for your examinations. Success here is the product of consistent effort, effective time management and unwavering commitment.”

Mr. Opok said, “One value that must remain central throughout your academic journey is integrity as your degree will derive its true worth not only from the knowledge you acquire, but also from the honesty with which you earn it. Protect your reputation and uphold the good name of Lira University by conducting yourselves with honesty, responsibility and professionalism in all that you do.”

While academic excellence remains our primary focus, Mr. Opok encouraged the students to embrace the broader university experience, adding that the University offers countless opportunities to develop students’ talents beyond the classroom.

On Students’ Guild Governance, Mr. Opok said, leadership begins with taking responsibility for your own actions, influencing others positively and serving your community with integrity, and, during your time at Lira University, I encourage you to cultivate the qualities of ethical leadership, critical thinking, innovation and service.

Deputy Academic Registrar, Mr. Kilama Wilfred emphasised the importance of understanding and complying with the University’s academic regulations, adding that the regulations exist to ensure fairness, transparency and the integrity of academic processes.

The newly elected Chief Fresher was sworn in as performance certificates issued to members of the Electoral Commission and outgoing Chief Fresher.
