Lira University Appointments Board Chairperson, Mr. Bosco Onyik Ogwal has lauded the Academic Staff Association (LUASA) for contributing enormously to the governance, quality, and welfare of the university.
“The role of LUASA includes, amongst others, representing faculty interests in the university Senate, Council, and other decision-making bodies, ensuring that academic voices shape the university policy and strategic direction,” Mr. Onyik Ogwal said while addressing the Special LUASA meeting at the EMBA Hall on 7th October 2026.

Mr. Onyik Ogwal, also a member of the University Council, allayed the fears that LUASA targets fighting the University Management, but rather, safeguards the right of lecturers and researchers to teach, publish, investigate, and speaks on controversial or scholarly topics without political or institutional interference.
“My strong advice to you is that, always remain united and focused, consider team spirit, remember the adage united we stand…divided we fall, “Mr. Onyik said.
The University Librarian, Dr. Andrew Ojulong noted that Lira University is currently running in the right trajectory, with bright future, academic and non-academic activities being implemented effectively and efficiently.

Dr. Ojulong who represented the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jasper Ogwal Okeng in the meeting, praised the academic staff for always pushing for high academic standards by advocating for adequate laboratory equipment, well-stocked libraries, reasonable student-to-staff ratios, and credible accreditation processes.
On advocacy for better conditions of service, LUASA Chairperson, Assoc. Prof. Edward Kumakech revealed that the association’s roles include negotiating fair salaries, research grants, healthcare benefits and manageable workloads for staff.
“As LUASA, we must avoid conflicting interests in all we do, the academic staff should unite for a common goal, diligently and professionally serve the university and the nation,” Prof. Kumakech said.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bernard Omech commended LUASA for boosting academic performance, upholding democratic principles, equity and fairness among staff. He encouraged LUASA to sponsor or encourage seminars, peer-mentoring groups, conferences, and collaborative research initiatives that elevate faculty output.
He advised the Association to frequently engage in public policy debates, national advocacy for education funding, and community outreach programs that bridge the gap between the university and society.

Those elected to represent the academic staff interests in the university organs are Ms Beth Namukwana to the University Council, Peter Paul Opio and Ritah Nakato to the University Staff Appeals tribunal.
Other notables present were CPA. Anthony Elemu, University Bursar, Mr. Opolo Peace and Mr. Odongo Herimous, the Vice Chairperson, LUASA. Several issues were discussed and resolved.
