Medical Students from Lira University have won the East African Society Physiological quiz and teaching competitions held in Rwanda on 8th to 10th May 2026.
Dean Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Francis Olwa said healthcare professionals, lecturers, students and researchers from Uganda universities and across East Africa gathered in Rwanda for a three-day academic workshop and quiz competition aimed at advancing physiology education and strengthening regional collaboration in health sciences.
“Our University emerged the best, we have won a trophy….we are happy with the Beacon Team,” he said.
While receiving the trophy, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Dr. Andrew Ojulong lauded the University Team for leading in the competition adding that Quiz competitions are vital for physiology students because they boost active learning, foster deep understanding of core human physiological principles.
Dr Ojulong adds, “Such academic competitions improve critical thinking beyond simple memorization. These events foster teamwork, enhance long-term retention through review, and identify knowledge gaps for improvement.”
At the university-level, Dr. Ojulong says, competitions, enhance learning through active participation and teamwork, bridging the gap between clinical theory and practice, the competence based-education currently being implemented.
Also present during the handover of the trophy were Dr. Iremaut Martin Osikei, Dr. Richard Ouma and Dr. Vincent A. Ssembatya, all from the National Council for Higher Education. Others were Mr. Geoffrey Angella, the Academic Registrar, Mr. Gad Kwizera(Deputy Dean Education Faculty) and Dr. Okello Samuel, a Senior Lecturer in the Physiology department.
