Lira University plans to undertake three new capital development projects costing more than sh75 Billion in the next 5 years.
Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jasper Ogwal Okeng named the multibillion projects as construction of University Main Library, Faculty of Management Sciences and Expansion of University Teaching Hospital. He was addressing Estates and Works Committee meeting on 29th November 2024.
Prof. Ogwal Okeng noted that on completion of the structures, library, teaching and health services will definitely improve at the university. “We are begging the Government or any other partners to support us, fund the projects for the young university to achieve its goals,” Prof. Ogwal Okeng noted.
The VC commended the Uganda Government for financing the construction of a multibillion Administration Block, now nearing completion, among others.
He informed the Committee of the pending pledge of the President, H.E. Yoweri Museveni of tarmacking the 24-km internal roads of the university. The pledge was made by President while installing the University Chancellor in 2019. The Committee resolved to write a reminder letter to the President and a select Committee, headed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ogwal Okeng to meet the President at an appropriate time over the roads issue.
The Committee Chairperson, Dr. Robert Omara revealed that the University Council is committed to support Management to effectively deliver services. “As Committee of the Council, we know where we are starting and and where we must go and end when our term of office expeires, we must leave a good legacy, make this university grow and meet international standards, be among the leading universities globally,” Dr. Omara asserts.
Dr. Omara adds, “The University Council shall always come out with vibrant policies to guide Management in the implementation and service delivery. We shall continue working as one Team, with one spirit, freely walking into offices for consultations and sharing information and experiences.”
Lira University, a Government funded university, sits on a 621-acre land in Barapwo Ward, Lira City West Division, Lira City (Main Campus), with another campus in Amolatar district, Faculty of Agriculture and Marine Sciences, 344 acres of land.
Members of the Estates Committee present were; Lira City Mayor, Hon. Sam Atul, Hon. Frederick Odongo, Augustine Oyang Atubo, Dr. Obonyo Francis, Faridah Wadumaga and Ayena Moses.
