Lira University scoops sh340 Million Grant for Youth Sexual Reproductive Health project

Lira University has scooped shs340 Million grant towards the construction of Youth Sexual Reproductive Health Centre structure.

The University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jasper Ogwal Okeng noted that the project, funded by Erasmus University, Netherlands, is the only one in Northern Uganda.

The VC revealed that, when completed, the building will house several offices and departments that will handle health issues of youth. He was addressing a site meeting on 24th March 2021.

Prof. Ogwal Okeng says that the project focuses on counseling youth on healthy sexual development, nutrition, and mental health for a better life. He adds that young people make use of health services that respond to their rights.

The Vice Chancellor says that just like public health, reproductive health, both disease preventive measures, have for long attract less attention by most institutions and agencies. “This trend is wrong, we would rather invest more in disease prevention than cure, a practice seen in most developed world,’ he adds.

He added that the project will increase access to youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services and a family planning Centre.

Lira University Secretary, Augustine Oyang Atubo reveals that involving youth in planning and implementation of services that affect them leads to wider benefits such as developing competencies and self-esteem, skills and experience as leaders, an improved status of young people in, as well as greater commitment of communities

He added that the facility will be well furnished with ICT equipment installed for users to enjoy and access health information in time. He reveals that currently, there are more young people in the world than ever before, therefore a specialized health project like this caters for their interest.

Oyang Atubo noted that the contractor, NATO Engineering Company Ltd was on track and expected to complete the construction in time. He observed that there is a dire need to plan for an attractive and friendly environment comprising of trees and grass at the facility being constructed.

Lira University’s Estate Officer, Richard Enen Okello observed that the lack of comprehensive sex education and information about sexual and reproductive health and rights makes it extremely challenging for young people to access their rights to reproductive health services, and achieve gender equality.

Lira University, a public educational institution created in 2015, is located in Ayere cell, Barapwo Ward, Lira City West Division, Lira City. The university covers a total area of 621 acres (251.3 hectares) of land.
