The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has been at Lira University for two days verifying the requirements for mounting Bachelor of Medicine this year.

The NCHE Team led by DR Apollo Epuat interacted with Lira University staff led by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Assoc. Prof. Okaka Opio Dokotum on 22nd-23rd June 2023. They visited all the facilities at the Faculty of Medicine, Teaching Hospital and Faculty of Midwifery and Nursing before finally meeting staff and the University’s Top Management Committee members.

Prof. Okaka Opio Dokotum noted that the University was more than ready to launch the Medicine Programme in August 2023. “Our Team has done what it takes to mount the long awaited Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, if NCHE accredits the course,” the DVC said.

NCHE Team Leader, Dr Epuat advised that universities need to effectively train health students who will render better services to the community. He added that there is a shortage of medical doctors in the country thus need to train more.

“The quality and attitude of some health workers produced in this country are questionable. Doctors should be kind, committed, ethical and self-driven in doing their work,” Dr Epuat observes. He lauded the professionals that are striving to provide quality services to all the citizens of Uganda.

He encouraged Lira University to produce the best doctors acceptable globally. “Produce properly trained doctors to challenge other universities. Your products will sell like hot cakes globally,” he advised.
