President Museveni gives sh100 Million to Lira University Staff SACCO

President Yoweri Museveni has fulfilled his pledge by wiring shs100 Million to Lira University Staff Savings and Credit Organisation (SACCO) bank account recently.

While addressing a meeting of leaders from Lango sub-region at Lira University on February 19, Museveni’s younger brother, Gen. Salim Saleh received the Bank Account number and wired the funds in the account that evening.

Lira University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jasper Ogwal Okeng noted that the President had made a pledge to support the staff SACCO while officiating the first university graduation ceremony on 1st November 2019.

The VC hailed President Museveni for keeping his promise of financial help to staff of the university. He added that the support will boost staff’s businesses and farming activities in attempts to increase their incomes and enhance livelihoods.

Professor Ogwal Okeng noted that the Staff SACCO successfully mobilized members to join the cooperative society and raised initial shs13, 450, 000 from members.

He added that Lira University Staff SACCO was fully registered on 8th July 2020, and a business practicing certificate obtained.

Lira University Secretary, Augustine Oyang Atubo revealed that President has boosted the University SACCO with bigger capital to loan out to staff.

Oyang Atubo noted that the money will be distributed to staff as loans so that it yields more interest. He added that Lira University Staff SACCO will be the best in the whole of Lira City in terms of performance and lending rates.

Lira University, a public educational institution created in 2015, is located in Ayere cell, Barapwo Ward, Lira City West Division, Lira City. The university covers a total area of 621 acres (251.3 hectares) of land.
